A: If your helmet is accident free, we recommend that it be replaced every 3-5 years due to the possibility of changing safety standards and the chance of unseen deterioration of the helmet’s shell and liner. However, if you have had an accident with your helmet, we recommend it be replaced immediately. Please see question #2 for our accident replacement policy.

Q: What is ASTM?

A: ASTM stands for the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world – a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevancy, ASTM International standards have an important role in the information infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy. ASTM committees are industry experts, engineers and doctors compiling criteria and testing methods for specific sports products. Phoenix uses this criteria as a product development “recipe” to make standardized vests and helmets. The products are tested in an independent lab to be sure they meet the criteria of the standard written by the ASTM.

Q: What is SEI?

A: The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) is a private, non-profit organization that administers a non-governmental, third-party certification program and tests and certifies a broad range of safety and protective products used occupationally and recreationally. SEI certification programs are voluntary and available to any manufacturer of safety and protective equipment seeking to have product models certified by SEI. Manufacturers and consumers are assured that products bearing the SEI label have been manufactured to meet the level of quality and performance of the most current comprehensive standards existing for the product.
